Wild cherry (Prunus avium) is native to Ireland. It has a fine texture, a pale sapwood and pinkish-brown heartwood, sometimes with a green tinge through the wood. The colour tends to darken appreciably on exposure to light. As the trees are relatively small, commercial supplies usually incorporate both sapwood and heartwood, giving a contrast in colour. Occasional dark pith flecks may be present.
